WE OFFER PROFESSIONAL SERVICES

Basic Data Service and Seismic Expert Studies on Hungarian Earthquakes

We operate a nationwide seismograph network. The detection threshold of our network (supplemented by our partner institutions's stations) covers most part of Hungary with magnitude threshold below 1.0 ML. This means that no felt earthquake goes undetected. In case of a felt earthquake in Hungary we send out questionaries to map macroseismic field. On these technical and information basis we provide:
  • HUN-RENG online earthquake information service (www.foldrenges.hu)      ---free

  • SMS and Email based automatic information on earthquakes in Hungary      ---subscription basis

  • Monthly Earthquake Bulletin of all recorded earthquakes in the territory of Hungary      ---subscription basis

  • Earthquake News modeled and macroseismic intensity distribution of felt earthquakes in the territory of Hungary     ---subscription basis

  • Hungarian Earthquake Bulletin (from 1995)      ---free

  • Earthquake Maps of Hungary and the Pannonian Basin      ---free

  • Seismic hazard zonation, soil classification and definition of seismic design response spectrum (DRS) according to MSZ EN 1998-1 (EUROCODE-8) or UBC-97 (USA Uniform Building Code)

If no specific probabilistic seismic hazard assessment (PSHA) is made for the facility's site, definition of seismic hazard zone is based on the relevant building codes. (EUROCODE-8; MSZ EN 1998-1; USA Uniform Building Code 1997). The brief Expert Study we offer includes finding of seismic zone and soil category as well as definition of seismic design response spectrum (DRS) for the site.

Duration: 1-2 weeks (depends on the availability of geotechnical data)

Complex Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Assessment (PSHA)

Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Assessment combines a knowledge of source zones, rate of earthquake recurrence and attenuation relationships. Based on these three elements, and using statistical techniques, the amplitude of ground motion will be calculated that is associated with a given return period or annual probability of being exceeded. Uncertainties will be incorporated in a systematic and rational way, using the "logic tree" formulation. In this method various alternatives for the input parameters can be used, and each assigned different weights, based on expert judgement.
    KEY OUTPUTS:
    - Seismic Hazard Curves at bedrock defined up to 100,000 year return period for different confidence levels
    - 5% damped Uniform Hazard Response Spectrum (UHRS) for different return periods for different confidence levels
    OPTIONAL OUTPUTS:
    - Soil investigation to define site effect, liquifaction and surface rupture potential
    - Design Response Spectrum (DRS) for site

    Duration: 3-12 months
